Dr. Joachim Meyer (contact person) at the Institute for Animal Breeding of the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Munich (FRG). In this announcement the official strain designations and some important characteristics are presented. The code "Lvg", standing for "Lehr- und Versuchsgut" OberschleiBheim, University of Munich, FRG, is registered as new subline symbol. For all strains originally developed in Munich, the common prefix "UM" (Universitat Munchen) is used. Tab. 1 contains the proposed strain nomenclature, the actual breeding generation, and the so far identified coat colour alleles of the different strains. 11 of them are inbreds while 4 are outbred stocks. The latter and 9 of the inbred strains have been developed at the institute while CBA/J and UMDH/+ were originally obtained from Charles River Germany and IFFA CREDO, France, respectively. They were continued as separate Munich sublines. UMDH/+ mice are characterized by the mutation at the Dh-locus (chrom. 1) expressing hemimelia in about 42% of the raised offspring linked with a total lack of the spleen. The original Munich inbred strains were developed in two steps. First, the founder mice were produced by selection for a high lifetime reproduction performance using mother x son or grandson - as well as brother x sister mating. The second step was characterized by consequent fulsib mating selecting mice from the first litter as new breeders. Beyond F20 the generation intervals were prolonged selecting the breeders from the third up to the fifth litter including more information about fertility and rearing performance of the mother. The strains UMB, UMB/a, UMB/b, UMC, UMZ, and UMZ/a were derived from the outbred stock UMPOP (described below) between 1960 and 1962. UMCBE was founded in 1971 by an intercross of a strain E (not defined, created at the Munich laboratory) and CBA/J mice. Strain UMG resulted from an intercross of UMPOP and CBA/J. Strain UMS was separated from UMPH-c (described below) in 1972. Details of the individual breeding history of the inbred strains are updated by WUNSCH (1992). The outbred stock UMPOP was based on 5 males and 15 females of the random bred stocks II (later on NMRI) and III of the Bundesforschungsanstalt fur Viruskrankheiten (Tubingen, FRG), described by GEHRING (1956). Outbreeding of UMPOP has been performed using between 80 and 100 breeding pairs per generation avoiding mating of animals having a common ancestor closer than two generations. The UMPH lines were developed for a phagocytosis selection experiment (BUSCHMANN and MEYER, 1981) by a triple cross using mice of UMPOP, UMB/a, and CBA/J followed by selection for high (UMPH-h) and low (UMPH-1) phagocytosis performance respectively compared to a non-selected control line (UMPH-c). Tab. 2 and 3 show the biochemical genetic profiles of the Munich strains completed by some quantitative data of the inbred strains in tab. 4. References Buschmann, H. and J. Meyer (1981).
