abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Genetics of C57BL substrains. The P/A strain, developed in Amsterdam by Korteweg (and not kept by any other laboratory) in the thirties by crossing the C57BL/LiA with the DBA/LiA and crossing back to C57BL/LiA for 20 generations without any selection, has the H-2be haplotype like the C57BL/LiA. The P/A strain cannot be distinguished so far by any genetic marker from the C57BL/LiA. Both strains differ, together with the BIMA/A (C57BL/LiA with "large" mammary glands from the C3H/HeA strain) and BIR (C57BL/LiA partially congenic for H-2a from the DBA/LiA strain), from all C57BL substrains kept in the USA, in the Mpi marker. The 4 substrains in Amsterdam are Mpia, while "American" blacks are Mpib (Dr. J. Hilkens). We propose to change the name of our P/A strain to C57P/A. In this case no confusion can arise with the P/J strain, a strain developed from the BDP strain (H. Gates) who crossed a DBA from Little with a pink-eyed mouse from Strong as described in 1927 (Genetics 12, 295) and as quoted in the Staats' lists. |
