Protein Coding Gene : Postn periostin, osteoblast specific factor

Primary Identifier  MGI:1926321 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  3 NCBI Gene Number  50706
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 7.1.0)

Enables heparin binding activity. Involved in cell adhesion and cellular response to vitamin K. Acts upstream of or within extracellular matrix organization; regulation of Notch signaling pathway; and tissue development. Located in collagen-containing extracellular matrix. Is expressed in several structures, including extraembryonic component; genitourinary system; heart and pericardium; musculoskeletal system; and nervous system. Used to study aggressive periodontitis and bone structure disease. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in congestive heart failure. Orthologous to human POSTN (periostin).
PHENOTYPE: Homozygous null mice display abnormalities of the enamel, periodontal ligament, ameloblasts, and incisors. For one allele changing the hardness of the food alters the severity of the abnormalities. [provided by MGI curators]
