Chromosome | 10 | NCBI Gene Number | 20598 |
Mgi Type | protein coding gene |
description | FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 8.0.0) Enables sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase activity. Involved in ceramide metabolic process and sphingomyelin catabolic process. Located in plasma membrane. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; genitourinary system; nervous system; respiratory system; and sensory organ. Orthologous to human SMPD2 (sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase 2). PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele are phenotypically normal, have a normal lifespan, and display neither lipid accumulation nor changes in sphingomyelin levels despite grossly reduced enzyme activity in all organs except brain.
