A structural constituent of skin epidermis. Involved in regulation of keratinocyte differentiation. Located in intermediate filament cytoskeleton. Is expressed in several structures, including cranium; fronto-nasal process; skin; surface ectoderm; and tongue. Orthologous to human KRT36 (keratin 36).
PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit hyperkeratosis affecting the scales of the tail skin and the filiform papillae of the tongue. [provided by MGI curators]
