Mgi Type | protein coding gene |
description | FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 8.0.0) Enables extracellularly ATP-gated monoatomic cation channel activity. Involved in modulation of chemical synaptic transmission. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including neuromuscular synaptic transmission; response to ATP; and smooth muscle contraction. Located in axon. Is active in Schaffer collateral - CA1 synapse and hippocampal mossy fiber to CA3 synapse. Is expressed in several structures, including branchial arch; embryo ectoderm; gut; nervous system; and retina. Orthologous to human P2RX3 (purinergic receptor P2X 3). PHENOTYPE: Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele show normal ventilatory responses to hypoxia. Mice homozygous for a reporter allele show loss of rapidly desensitizing ATP-gated cation currents in dorsal root ganglion neurons, reduced formalin-evoked pain behavior, and enhanced thermal hyperalgesia.
