Mgi Type | protein coding gene |
description | FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 8.0.0) Enables broad specificity oxidative DNA demethylase activity and cytosine C-5 DNA demethylase activity. Involved in DNA alkylation repair. Predicted to be located in nucleolus and nucleoplasm. Orthologous to human ALKBH2 (alkB homolog 2, alpha-ketoglutarate dependent dioxygenase). PHENOTYPE: Homozygous null mice are viable and overtly normal but show progressive accumulation of 1-methyladenine (1meA) in their genomic DNA due to impaired DNA repair. Mutant MEFs fail to remove methyl methane sulfate (MMS)-induced 1meA from genomic DNA and showincreased cytotoxicity after MMS exposure. [provided by MGI curators] |
