Primary Identifier | MGI:87999 | Organism | mouse, laboratory |
Chromosome | 6 | NCBI Gene Number | 11689 |
Mgi Type | protein coding gene |
description | FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 8.0.0) Enables arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase activity. Involved in several processes, including leukotriene A4 biosynthetic process; negative regulation of angiogenesis; and regulation of cellular response to stress. Acts upstream of or within leukotriene biosynthetic process and leukotriene production involved in inflammatory response. Located in cytoplasm and nucleus. Is expressed in limb long bone and small intestine epithelium. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in artery disease (multiple); asthma (multiple); pancreatic cancer; and pulmonary tuberculosis. Orthologous to human ALOX5 (arachidonate 5-lipoxygenase). PHENOTYPE: Nullizygous mice show altered inflammatory responses. One null mutation causes resistance to lethal anaphylaxis, abnormal eicosanoid production and neutrophil recruitment while another leads to increased body fat, bone density, leptin and VLDL cholesterol levels and resistance to autoimmune uveitis.
