description | FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 8.0.0) Predicted to enable acrosin binding activity and identical protein binding activity. Predicted to be a structural constituent of egg coat. Involved in binding activity of sperm to zona pellucida and prevention of polyspermy. Located in several cellular components, including collagen-containing extracellular matrix; endoplasmic reticulum; and multivesicular body. Is expressed in germ cell of ovary; oocyte; ovary; secondary oocyte; and testis. Orthologous to human ZP2 (zona pellucida glycoprotein 2). PHENOTYPE: Female homozygous mutants exhibit a thin zona pellucida matrix in early ovarian follicles that becomes disassociated in pre-ovulatory follicles. Few oocytes are produced, and any that are fertilized fail to survive to the two-cell stage. [provided by MGI curators] |
