Mgi Type | protein coding gene |
description | FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 8.0.0) Enables glycerol-3-phosphate O-acyltransferase activity. Involved in lactation and triglyceride biosynthetic process. Acts upstream of or within several processes, including acylglycerol metabolic process; glandular epithelial cell maturation; and mammary gland development. Located in endoplasmic reticulum. Is expressed in several structures, including adipose tissue; genitourinary system; liver; mammary gland; and spleen. Orthologous to human GPAT4 (glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase 4). PHENOTYPE: Nursing mothers homozygous for a gene trap allele display underdeveloped mammary glands that are depleted in intracellular fat droplets and lack the ability to produce diacylglycerol- and triacylglycerol-rich milk; pups nursed by mutant mothers die neonatally unless transferred to foster mothers.
