Protein Coding Gene : Insl3 insulin-like 3

Primary Identifier  MGI:108427 Organism  mouse, laboratory
Chromosome  8 NCBI Gene Number  16336
Mgi Type  protein coding gene
description  FUNCTION: Automated description from the Alliance of Genome Resources (Release 8.0.0)

Predicted to enable G protein-coupled receptor binding activity and protease binding activity. Involved in regulation of male gonad development. Acts upstream of or within in utero embryonic development and male gonad development. Predicted to be located in perinuclear region of cytoplasm. Predicted to be active in extracellular space. Is expressed in Leydig cell; cornea; ovary; testis; and trunk. Used to study cryptorchidism. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in cryptorchidism. Orthologous to human INSL3 (insulin like 3).
PHENOTYPE: Targeted mutations that inactivate the locus result in abnormal gubernaculae development and consequent bilateral cryptorchidism. Spermatogenesis is impaired and male mice are infertile. Female infertility due to disregulation of the oestrus cycle was observed in one mutant line. [provided by MGI curators]
