abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Research News: H. JOCKUSCH, K. BERTRAM: 'Arrested development of righting response' (adr) and 'myotonia' (mto) are allelic. Recent electrophysiological analysis (Mehrke et al., MNL 74, p.83, 1986 and J. Muscle Res. & Cell Mot. 7, p.85, 1986) of muscle from adr/adr mice has shown that the ADR syndrome is a myotonia. It was therefore tested whether adr is allelic to mto, 'myotonia' (Heller & Sidman, MNL 65, p.16, 1981). Intercrosses of the type A2G adr/+ female x SWR/J mto/+ male (from Jackson Laboratory) were performed. From 2 litters, 11 adolescent mice were obtained, of which 3 showed the diseased phenotype (stiffening of hindlegs after rapid movements, 'D') and 8 were normal ('N'). Weights and phenotypes at 34 d p.n. are given: Litter 1: female, 13.6 g, D; female, 22.9 g, N; male, 21.9 g, N. Litter 2: male, 13.6 g, D; male, 13.1 g, D; female, 19.0 g, N; female, 18.2 g N; female, 19.3 g, N; female, 18.0 g, N; male, 21.6 g, N. It follows that mto is allelic to adr. While, according to present knowledge, 'myotonia' seems an appropriate name for the disease, the discovery of 'adr' (Watts, R.L. et al. in 'The Biochemistry of Myasthenia Gravis and Muscular DystrophyĆ, C.G. Lunt and R.M. Marchbanks, Eds., Academic Press, 1978, pp.331-334) preceeded that of 'mto' (Heller & Sidman, MNL 65, p.16, 1981 ). Thus, according to the rules for gene nomenclature (MNL 72, p.2-12, 1985) the alleles should be called adr and adr*mt or adr*2 respectively.* *adrmto has been agreed as the designation of mto, Personal Communication with Dr. Jockusch |
