Tyrosinase is the key enzyme for melanogenesis. In mice, its gene has been considered to be localized at the c-locus on chromosome 7. Mutations at the c-locus are known to result in reduction of tyrosinase activity including albinism. We recently cloned and sequenced cDNA for mouse tyrosinase. Using this cDNA as a probe, we localized the gene on the chromosome by in situ hybridization and detected the gene expression at mRNA level in skin and eyes of the wild-type and mutant.
