| abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Directional caracul, Ca<d>. This mutation arose spontaneously in a cross of (101 x C3H)F1 male X T (multiple recessive) female. The heterozygote resembles Ca/+ except for the fact that it shows a clear ridge of hair down the center of the back, which disappears by weaning age. This ridge is very probably due to opposite directions of curling on the two sides of the body, and its later disappearance probably due to decrease in degree of curling with increasing age. Homozygotes are extremely curly and develop baldish patches, extending over most of the anterior part of the back, that persist throughout life. Both heterozygotes and homozygotes are fully viable and fertile. A cross of homozygous mutant by Ca/Ca, and subsequent outcross of the F1 to wild type, has yielded no wild-type among 722 classified young, indicating that the mutant is an allele of Caracul. Of the 722 young, 236 (128 male, 108 female) had the dorsal hair ridge. The deficiency of this type is probably due to the fact that classification in many cases was made after the ridge had disappeared. |
