abstractText  Full text of MNL conribution: M.M. Dickie. New mutations: 2. Hairpin tail. One AKR/J male from a litter born in January 1962 had a short kinky tail. When outcrossed to C3H/HeJ and to C57BL/6J abnormal animals were recovered in the F1. Litter size of abnormal female by normal male matings was 4.1, of abnormal male by normal female was 7.3, and of abnormal male by abnormal female was 3.6. Study of timed matings showed that disparity in litter size was also present at 12 days of gestation (i.e., 11.2 for abnormal male x normal female and 7.3 for abnormal x abnormal). Cytological studies of the testes of the heterozygote showed that in a large percentage of primary spermatocytes in late diakinesis or early metaphase, chiasma formation is completely absent. Synapsis is normal but the bivalents are held together only by the centromeres. The significance of this finding is not known. Skeletal abnormalities have been observed, only in the axial skeleton, and include fusion of vertebrae, scoliosis of lower thoracic and upper lumbar vertebrae, failure of laminae to fuse, and reduction in number of lumbar vertebrae and caudal vertebrae. Most pronounced effects were noted in the sacral region. Since the tail was not always kinked in abnormal animals there were errors in classification, but measurement of the tail has reduced this error. This mutation has been called hairpin tail and the suggested symbol is Hp (with A.B. Griffen and J.E. Frazier).
