abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution. 4. Remutation to tufted (tf) in AKXL-29 RI strain. We have noticed that AKXL-29 mice develop a peculiar hair loss pattern as adults. This was first observed in July 1985, but was considered to be a temporary moulting or grooming condition and was not suspected of being genetic. However the condition persisted, and on the advice of Hope Sweet was tested for allelism with tufted. TF/GnLe-tf/tf females were mated to AKXL-29 males. All of the Fl progeny began losing hair above the eyes at 5-6 weeks of age, a characteristic of tf homozygotes. Therefore we conclude that a remutation to tf has occurred in the AKXL-29 strain. This is the first such remutation of tf to be discovered at The Jackson Laboratory and will be designated tfJ. Unfortunately, the mutation became fixed in the strain before it was recognized. We are hopeful that it will be possible to recover AKXL-29 mice from frozen embryos that do not carry tfJ. (Taylor and M. Ivey)
