abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: B. New Mutants: Furloss Frl. Arose spontaneously in stock 17Zb (d se). Dominant, probably homozygous lethal, not closely linked to hr. Heterozygotes are smaller than wild type sibs. At about 5 days, they are first distinguishable by tight, wrinkled, and sometimes scaly skin. Fur loss begins at about 20-26 days, first around nose and eyes and proceeding caudally in large random dorsal patches within which the skin appears dry and scaly. The ventral fur disappears within 3-4 days. Some regrowth of sparse hair begins about one week after the initial loss; but, by 4 months of age, Frl/+ animals are naked and remain thus for the remainder of their lives. Preliminary tests with hr indicate that Frl assorts independently or is at least not closely linked to hr. Frl/+; hr/+ animals resemble Frl/+; +/+. However, the phenotype of Frl/+; hr/hr is more extreme than either mutant alone, somewhat resembling rhino Ð extremely wrinkled and loose skin with a big fold running down each side of the body (Douglas Raymer) |
