abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Histologic studies on Knobbly (Kb) homozygotes show that there is a defect in the embryonic ectoderm first apparent at about 7 1/4 days with the appearance of rounded, crowded, granular cells in the region anterior to the primitive streak. This ectoderm is uneven in thickness throughout its circumference. Furthermore, the amniotic cavity fails to elongate properly. By about 8 days, the lesion has spread along the embryonic ectoderm with many dead and dying cells present. Mesoderm appears to be made in small amounts up to this time. There seems to be a high frequency of twinning among +/Kb X +/Kb matings. (Eleven litters produced 6 pairs of twins or 6 twin capsules out of a total of 119 capsules.) Twins are usually in separate yolk sacs and combinations of normal-normal, normal-mutant and mutant-mutant are found. Genetic crosses have shown that Kinky (Ki) is allelic with Kb. Embryos obtained from mating Kb/LR males with Ki/+ females are being studied to determine the time and nature of the lethal defect in Ki/Kb embryos. (Jacobs) |
