abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: New Mutation: Toxic milk - (tx). A recessive mutation appeared in strain DL. Litters born to homozygous females show considerable yellowing as well as reduction of hair coloration, which is recognizable as early as 6 days postnatal. Growth rate is much reducing during the second week and is accompanied by severe tremors, ataxia, hyperextension of hindlimbs and hyperflexion of wrists; death occurs at 10 to 14 days. Fostering to normal females of such litters up to 5 days of age leads to complete alleviation of symptoms and survival. Litters from normal females fostered to mutant females also develop normally. Mutant females tend to have fewer litters by stopping their breeding early, but otherwise no other irregularities in reproduction are evident. Homozygous males appear entirely normal. Milk from mutant females contains more than 120 PPM of TIN as compared to less than 30 PPM in normal milk. Tin accumulates in the offspring so that by 5 days for instance brains and carcasses contain 10 to 15 times as much tin as do normal litters from normal females. Levels of tin in homozygous adult males and females as well as embryos are currently being determined. |
