abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: H.G. Wolfe. New allele at the mi locus: A total of five mutant animals born in 2 different litters, appeared in a cross between a C57BL/6 female x Miwh+ male. The mutants may best be described as light yellow with white spots. They occurred in backcross generation 44 in stock C57BL/6-Miwh. Origin of the mutation was traced to the C57BL/6 female parent (or its progenitors) and subsequent breeding tests showed the mutant gene (tentatively symbolized as misp) to be allelic to microphthalmia. No observable expression of the gene has been detected in either its heterozygous (misp+) or homozygous (mispmisp) form. Yellow, spotted animals were found to be Miwh misp. Hence, misp misp - wild type; Miwh misp - light ye1low (turning to "sooty" at first moult) with white spots, both dorsal and ventral, and pigmented eyes. mimisp - nearly all-white with some pigmentation in eyes (reduced over that of mi+) and some "flecks" of pigmented hairs on the dorsum. All the above combinations are viable and fertile.
