abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Mutation at mi locus. Black-eyed white mice occurred in each of three litters of a sire x dtr mating at F52 of NZB/Mac. The appearance of these mice was similar to that described for mice of the genotype mibw mibw. The numbers of black-eyed whites (BW) and black mice were consistent with a supposed mating of two heterozygotes viz : + mibw. The mutant gene which appears to be an allele at the mi locus has been provisionally named mix. BW mice (? mix mix) were mated to mice of genotype Miwh + atat and approximately half of the offspring were BW (? Miwh mix) and half black and tan (? + mix). BW offspring (? Miwh mix) when mated produce approximately 3/4 BW and l/4mock albino (presumably Miwh Miwh). The compound Miwh mix unlike the compound Miwh mibw appears to have black eyes when examined at birth rather than red (Cf. Apparent situation for Miwh mibw reported in MNL 28, 29). Reduced eye size and eyelid closure of variable extent have been observed in the supposed compound with Miwh. Further work is in progress to verify the expected ratios of matings involving the mutant gene and to confirm the apparent lack of difference in appearance of the genotypes mix mix and Miwh mix. |
