abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Wood and Miner: In MNL 38 Miner reported a spontaneous recessive mutant in the C57BL/6-Bn stock in our laboratory. Further testing has shown this mutant to be allelic to Microphthalmia. Its expression is different from other alleles reported at the mi locus (summarized by Hollander, 1968). The provisional symbol miew (eyeless, white) has been assigned. The miew homozygote has a white body coat with undeveloped eyes and eyelids which never open; teeth appear normal and fertility appears slightly reduced. Various crosses have given the following: (1) Miwh/miew, white body coat, dark red eyes with reduced eyelid openings; (2) miew/+, black coat and black eyes; (3) mibw/miew, white body coat and black eyes; and (4) misp/miew, white body coat with black spots and black eyes. Histological studies of the miew/miew adult eye have demonstrated an almost complete lack of development. Wood is examining various stages of miew/miew development in an attempt to determine time and cause of eye and pigmentation defects. |
