abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: 2. Dickie's small eye (Dey). A new semidominant mutation found in the C3H/HeJ strain in 1964 by the late Dr. Margaret Dickie, causes abnormal development of embryonic ectoderm. Homozygotes apparently die early. At 6 days of gestation some presumed homozygotes are very retarded and are composed of a small knot of distal endodermal cells with Reichert's membrane, trophoblastic giant cells, and a few ectodermal cells. Some heterozygotes can be identified at 7 days of gestation by retarded development, failure of the egg cylinder to elongate, and abnormal embryonic ectoderm. A few heterozygotes die between 7 and 11 days gestation. Some 12 day fetuses are 3/4 normal size with abnormal brain and eye development. It is assumed that these animals will not survive. Newborn heterozygotes are about 3/4 normal size and have small eyes. About 5% of these do not suckle and die within 8 to 10 hours. They have areas of dead brain cells. Affected adults are smaller than normal littermates, have small eyes with no anterior chambers, vacuolated lenses, and usually white belly spots. Allelism tests performed by Dr. Dickie with ak and Miwh were negative. (Varnum and Stevens). |
