abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: 4. A new steel allele which does not lead to dilution of coat colour. A new steel allele Sl17H was found among the progeny of a male C3H/HeH mouse treated with 250 mg/kg ethylnitrosourea and mated to tester stock females two months later, so any induced mutations would have arisen in spermatogonial stem cells. The heterozygote generally has some white spotting on the tail and/or feet. Occasionally a head spot and/or belly spot is found. Unlike other Sl alleles, the pigmented areas of the coat only rarely show dilution of coat colour. In Sl17H/Slccon heterozygotes the effects of the two alleles appear additive, i.e. white spotting of the tail and head as well as a black genital papilla though occasionally only the Slcon is expressed and the Sl17H not penetrant. Slight dilution of the coat occurs. 433 offspring were born from an outcross +/+ x Sl17H/Slcon, and 206 were classified as Sl17H/+ and 227 as Slcon/+. Our interpretation of these data is that Sl17H is allelic with Slcon. The homozygote is a black eyed white with some dark pigmentation on the ears, and an occasional pigmented spot on the rump. The female is fertile but the male is sterile with very small testes. (Peters, Ball and Loutit)
