abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: P.W. Lane. New Mutation: A new allele of varitint waddler, called varitint waddler-J, VaJ, with less severe manifestations than Va arose spontaneously in a male segregant from a linkage cross in 1967. This male was not as varicolored as a Va/+ mouse should be and must have been a somatic and germinal mosaic, for when mated to a C57BL/6J the following 3 phenotypes were produced: 34 +/+, 25 Va/+ and 11 mice more uniform than their father with a slightly dilute coat color, large irregular belly spots and white feet and tail tips resembling Wv/+ mice. Except for being deaf these nice behave normally. Allele tests were made by producing the compound Va/VaJ and out-crossing to +/+. To date 18 Va/+, 16 VaJ /+, and 0 +/+ have been produced. A linkage test bewteen VaJ and flaky-tail (ft) showed 26% recombination. Recombination between Va and ft is 25%. The homozygote VaJ/VaJ is mostly white with patches of dilute color. It is deaf but can swim and both sexes are fertile. It does not have the abnormal behavior of Va. The compound Va/VaJ looks like VaJ/VaJ, but has abnormal behaviour like Va/+. It is most likely that vaJ arose as a mutation from Va. |
