abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: P.W. Lane. New mutations: Froggy (fg), a new recessive mutation, arose in the ls stock in July 1963. Homozygotes can be recognized by 14 to 15 days of age by smaller than normal size and an abnormal position of the hind limbs when picked up by the tail. They tend to hold the hind legs together when extending them. By 6-8 weeks of age a kyphosis is evident which becomes progressively worse. The hind limbs eventually become permanently flexed into a position like that of the hind limbs of a frog and the mouse moves with a short shuffling gait. Some fg/fg females can produce 1 or 2 small litters but most males do not breed. By 4-6 months the condition is so severe that fg/fg mice cannot extend the legs enough to swim nor the spine enough to keep the head above water. Few have lived beyond 10 months of age. Froggy does not resemble any other mutation in the mouse. |
