| abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: Research News: 1. Doublefoot, a new mutation affecting limb development. A male carrying a spontaneous mutation at a new locus affecting the limbs was found among the offspring of a mating to produce C3H/HeH x 101/H F1 hybrids. The gene maps to chromosome 1, between fz and ln, and this map position provides the evidence that the gene is new. The mutant allele is dominant, and has been given the name and symbol doublefoot, Dbf. Affected animals have many extra toes on all four feet, making the feet appear double in width. The long bones of the limbs are shortened and reduced. The animals are smaller than normal sibs at birth and remain smaller throughout, and viability is reduced. The skull is broad and some animals develop hydrocephalus. The tail is sometimes kinked. In females vaginal opening is delayed: in males testis weight is reduced; some animals of each sex are sterile. In backcrosses of + Dbf +/fz + ln to fz + ln/fz + ln the offspring were: Sex of heteroz.: Female; Dbf ++: 13; Dbf fz+: 10; Dbf +ln: 2; Dbf fzln: 1; + ++: 1; + fz+: 2; + +ln: 14; + fzln: 23; Total: 66. Sex of heteroz.: Male; Dbf ++: 0; Dbf fz+: 2; Dbf +ln: 0; Dbf fzln: 0; + ++: 0; + fz+: 4; + +ln: 5; + fzln: 18; Total: 29. It is thus concluded that the order is as shown with recombination: fz-Dbf, 33/95, 34.7 +/- 4.9%: Dbf-ln, 10/95, 10.5 +/- 3.2%; fz-ln, 39/95, 41.1 +/- 5.1%. (M. Lyon, R. Quinney, K. Whitehill). |
