| abstractText | The Cataract Shionogi (CTS) strain was created by selection for cataracts with micropthalmia in a stock of outbred JCL:ICR mice in which a dominant cataract was discovered in 1966. Because two additional cataract-free inbred strains, the autoimmune Type 1 diabetes-prone Nonobese Diabetic (NOD/Shi) and the Type 2 diabetes-prone Nonobese Nondiabetic (NON/Shi) also were produced from the same progenitor stock during the course of this selection process, the genetic analysis of the autoimmune diabetes-resistant CTS/Shi strain has been largely limited to the immunologic differences that distinguish them from the related NOD strain. In the present study, we untertake genetic studies to identify the molecular basis underlying the cataract development for which the CTS/Shi strain was selected. |
