abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: Research News: Microphthalmic mutant in CBA strain. A semi-dominant mutant appeared spontaneously in our CBA/CaCrc inbred colony. The eyes of heterozygotes have less iris pigment than normal at birth. Heterozygotes have non-pigmented tail tips and may also show white spotting on the belly, but not the head. Homozygotes are devoid of pigment in the hairs and eyes. The eyes are small and the eyelids do not open. The teeth of the homozygote fail to erupt and the mutant is osteopetrotic. In matings between heterozygotes there is a significant deviation from the expected segregation ratio. This appears to be due to the death of microphthalmic female embryos before or soon after implantation. Homozygotes of both sexes are sterile. In matings of heterozygotes with mi/+ mice, kindly supplied by Dr. Loutit, microphthalmic young were produced which were indistinguishable from homozygotes for our CBA mutation. It seems probably that this is a remutation to mi and it will therefore be designated miCrc.
