| abstractText | In collaboration with the Genome Exploration Research Group of the RIKEN Institute of Physical and Chemical Research in Japan, Mouse Genome Informatics released information for 21,076 mouse cDNA clones (see J:65060). Of the 15,294 genes identified by these cDNAs at that time, 12,905 were new genes to MGI. These new genes were assigned temporary official nomenclature of the structure: Gene Symbol=<Riken Clone Identifier>"Rik". Curation of RIKEN genes by MGI Editorial Staff regularly leads to revised nomenclature, as more information becomes available about the function of these genes and their relationships to better characterized sequences. Nomenclature revisions and other curation of RIKEN genes considers sequence associations to paralogous and orthologous sequences, and recommendations from collaborative databases (NCBI, SWISS-PROT) and the scientific community.
