abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: Research News: 2) Aconitase. Two zones of aconitase activity have been found in inbred strains of mice by starch gel electrophoresis. One zone migrates anodally and the other cathodally under our conditions. Tissue distribution suggests that the anodal activity originates from the cytosol and the cathodal from mitochondria. The anodal isozyme is polymorphic in the Peru/Coppock stock and wild caught mice from Somerset and Scotland. These animals have a phenotype of greater anodal electrophoretic mobility than the inbred strains C57BL/Gr, C3H/HeLac, SM/J, IS/Cam, SWR/J, SEA/Gn, AU/SsJ, BALB/cGr, NZW, CBA/Cam, DBA-1, Simpson, NMRI/Lac, 129/Rr, C57L/Lac, AKR, A2G/Lac. The cathodal activity is unaffected by this polymorphism. Pedigree studies of the inheritance of the anodal phenotypes in the Peru/Coppock stock suggest codominant inheritance at an autosomal locus. We propose the gene symbol Aco-1 with the inbred strains, carrying the Aco-1a allele and Peru/Coppock Aco-1a and Aco-1b alleles. (Nash and Newton).
