abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: 3. Alcohol dehydrogenase temporal locus (Adh-lt). Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) exists as at least 2 major isozymes in the mouse which are encoded by closely linked structural genes on chromosome 3: Adh-1 (A2 isozyme) and Adh-3 (C2 isozyme). In addition, ADH-C2 activity in male sex accessory glands is regulated by a cis-acting closely linked temporal locus (Adh-3t) (Developmental Genetics 2 (1981) 89-98). Evidence has been obtained for a closely linked cis-acting temporal locus (designated Adh-1t) regulating ADH-A2 activity in mouse kidney extracts. Segregation of the proposed temporal locus (Adh-1t) and the structural locus (Adh-1) was examined in the following backcross: F1 female (Danish x male CBA/H). The variable kidney ADH-A2, activity phenotype is inherited as though controlled by a single gene (Adh-1t) with 2 alleles: Adh-1ta (Danish strain high activity) and Adh-1tb (CBA/H low activity). Fifty eight of the BC progeny, typed as hybrids for the structural locus (Adh-la Adh-1b) from their liver and intestine isozyme patterns showed kidney ADH-A2 allozyme phenotypes which were consistent with the Adh-1t locus being closely-linked, cis-acting and specific in its effect to that of the kidney ADH-A2.
