abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: 3. Position of centromeres in Linkage groups II & IX. Previous linkage tests had shown that the se locus showed about 38% recombination with the metacentric marker chromosome T(2; ?) 163H. Tests with Cw (T163 +/+ cw x + cw/+ cw) have now given 1 recombinant out of 73 tested offspring of 1.37%. This indicates that the centromere is at the cw end of linkage group II, and the recombinant's genotype suggested that the order of loci is centromere-cw-se. The centromere is about 1 - 2 map units from the cw locus or more if T163H causes any crossover suppression near the centromere. The cw-se recombination in the presence of T163 is 21/54 or 38.9%, and hence there is no evidence of crossover suppression distal to cw, or of inversion in T163. Data from T(2; 9) 138 Ca homozygotes (MNL 36: 34 & 40) indicated that the loci of d and T are on opposite sides of the chromosome break in this translocation. Since the break is proximal to d (Green, MNL 35: 32) it must therefore be distal to T, and as the order in group IX is T-tf-T138 (Lyon and Phillips, 1959) then it must also be centromere-T-tf-T138. The distance between T and the centromere is not known, however. (Lyon and J. Butler).
