abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: A gene complex that governs the structure of an androgen-regulated gene and the nature of the corresponding RNAs. We have used plasmid pMK908, whose cDNA insert corresponds to an androgen-inducible RNA from mouse kidney to study the complementary DNA and RNA sequences in several inbred strains of mice. A polymorphism in the 908 structural gene, revealed by Southern blotting of HindIII-generated DNA fragments, was found to map near the Gpi-1 and Tam-1 loci on chromosome 7. The 908 RNAs, as observed on Northern blots, constitute an RNA family displaying extensive size heterogeneity. The members of the family that are expressed, reflected in the RNA pattern, is controlled both by testosterone and by a genetic site that is tightly linked to the structural gene. We propose the existence of a gene complex, RP2; this complex contains the 908 structural gene (termed RP2-s) and a tightly-linked regulatory element (termed RP2-r) that contRP2-s and RP2-r has been found in any of the 22 inbred and recombinant inbred strains that have been analyzed.
