abstractText  Full text of MNL contribution: Research news: c) Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. Starch gel electrophoresis of mouse testis extract stained for G6PD revealed novel zones of activity cathodal to the X linked isozymes. Unlike G6PD-X this activity is polymorphic in the inbred strains tested; a result confirmed by Dr. Josephine Peters (Harwell) on cellulose acetate plates. Preliminary substrate/cofactor preference tests suggest very similar properties to the G6PD-X isozymes and quite distinct from GPD-1. Two variants have been identified in the inbred strains, a fast single band of activity in CE/J, C57BL/Go, IS/Cam and P/J; and a slower band of activity in DBA/2 and SM/J. F1 hybrids C57BL/G male x DBA/2 female, SM/J female x P/J male, produce a three banded pattern typical of a dimeric protein coded by an autosomal locus. In both B.C. breedings tabulated below Pgm-1 also segregates and no recombinant was found indicating a structural locus close to Pgm-1 on chromosome 5. B.C. results: 1. (SM/J female x P/J male)P/J male : (B x A)A. N=24 G6PD-2A : 10 G6PD-2AB : 14 2. (DBA/2J female x C57BL/Go male)C57BL/Go male (B x A)A G6PD-2A : 3 G6PD-2AB : 7 1 + 2 13A 21AB X 2/1, = 1.703 p > 0.1.
