abstractText | Full text of MNL contribution: 3. Relationship between bareskin, denuded, and rex. Lyon and Zenthon (MNL 74: 96, 1986) reported that bareskin (Bsk) is closely linked to Re on chromosome 11. Eicher and Varnum (MNL 75: 29-30, 1986) then found that denuded (Den) was also closely linked to Re, giving no crossovers out of 504 offspring. They suggested that denuded was an allele of Re and should be redesignated as Reden. We have now obtained more extensive data on the linkage of Bsk and Re. Among 811 offspring of Bsk+/+Re heterozygotes there was a single crossover animal, phenotypically wild-type; the remainder were 437 Bsk+ and 373 +Re. Thus crossing-over can occur between these two genes, but is very rare. The possibility that denuded also recombines with Re at a similarly low frequency cannot be excluded. Thus Bsk and Re appear to form a gene complex similar to that formed by Rw, W and Ph. Denuded is at least as likely to be an allele of Bsk as of Re, bearing in mind that its phenotype is closer to that of Bsk. (Lyon and Zenthon) |
