molecularNote  Exon 1 was replaced with a neomycin selection cassette inserted by homologous recombination. The deleted region encoded the 5' untranslated region and the first cytoplasmic loop. Autoradiography showed an absence of melatonin binding in sections of homozygous mutant brains, indicating complete functional ablation.
